The overview
What is the sub-2kg excluded category?
CASA’s “very small” excluded category lets you fly a drone under 2kg commercially without a full remote Pilot Licence (RePL) provided you follow their Standard Operating Conditions (SOCs). This course gets you flying safely and insured.
The Sub 2kg Light Commercial course is the fastest, most affordable way to fly drones under 2kg commercially in CASA’s excluded category. No full Remote Pilot Licence (RePL) required. It suits complete beginners chasing a new hobby, pilots who want to understand the rules and sharpen their risk management, and professionals who only ever fly very small RPA in uncontrolled or unrestricted airspace.
We built this course from the same material as our full commercial RePL, then trimmed it to exactly what a sub-2kg operator needs. Most students finish the optional online theory in one to two days, at their own pace, with no exam. There is no pressure and nothing to memorise. The theory is there to make you a safer, sharper pilot.
The heart of the course is a full day of practical flight training, delivered to the same standard as our Sub 7kg RePL because you train on the same field, on the same day, alongside our RePL students and instructors. On completion, Droneit issues a Certificate of Competency (CoC) so you can get insured and fly with confidence.
You will still have the usual excluded-category limits (no flying at night or in controlled or restricted airspace such as near helipads and airports). The full RePL removes those. If you upgrade later, your Sub 2kg course is credited $295 toward your RePL, along with the flight hours you log on your training day. In effect, this course can become free if you go on to your full licence.
